:  the thin cuticular remains of the enamel organ which surrounds the enamel of a tooth during its fetal development and for a brief period after birth

Biographical Note for NASMYTH'S MEMBRANE

Nasmyth, Alexander (died 1848), British anatomist and dentist. Nasmyth served as oral surgeon to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In 1839, in an article on the structure and diseases of teeth, he described the cuticle of the dental enamel, now known as Nasmyth's membrane.
